Egyptian Birth Signs The Egyptian horoscopes are divided into 12 signs each one ruled by a different Egyptian god.

These were unlike the Greek (from who we have inherited our present astrological signs) and were not used for the day you were born, their birth signs were determined by the Egyptian months of the year and the Deities or creatures that presided over the months.

There are a number of different versions of the Egyptian calendar, but the following information has been based upon the end of Ancient Egyptian history, discovered by archaeologists on the Temple of the Sun and is over 4000 years old.

Thoth 29 August – 27 September
The ibis head god Thoth was the lord of the moon and his name in Ancient Egyptian was Tehuti. He was the lord of time and the god of learning and imagination, presiding over scribes and knowledge. Accordingly, those born in this sign share an unusual combination of both the materialistic and the imaginative. One of the chief characteristics of the Thoth personality is to constantly question the world about them. They are both analytical and self-critical, sometimes to the extent of impeding progress. However, the Thoth can achieve remarkable results in a very short time.

The Thoth has great versatility and an excellent memory, are capable of solving many problems that others find difficult. Neat and methodical they take pride in their work. Don’t criticise them though, although critical of themselves they don’t take too kindly to being told of their faults and flaws! Usually the last people to take advice so don’t offer it wait until you are asked!

Horus 28 September – 27 October
The falcon headed god Horus (whose name in Ancient Egypt was Heru) was the son of Osiris and Isis and god of the rising sun. He was a sign of divine kingship and risked his very existence to avenge his father’s death and oppose his slayer, Set. Like their mythical counterpart, those born in the sign of Horus often take risks or embark upon enterprises without taking precautions. The Horus is stubborn in their convictions although they make loyal and trustworthy friends and those born in this cycle are usually highly protective of those they love.

Inventive and creative and always on the look out for something new, not easily distracted with an optimistic attitude! Sound like anyone you know? Be careful, Horus unrealistic attitude to life can make it difficult for them to realise their ambitions. Complications can arise through failure to accept problems or avoid danger and they often conflict with those in authority. Their motto should be “All or Nothing” you have been warned.

Wadjet 28 October – 26 November
Wadjet, known as Uatchat, was the royal cobra goddess of Ancient Egypt, who was supposed to have created the papyrus swamps of the Delta. As a deity of kingship, her image adorned the front of the pharaoh’s crown, when it was called the uraeus. Depicted as a cobra about to strike, Wadjet was a symbol of knowledge and those born under this sign often exude an aura of wisdom. Wadjet people have logical and calculating minds and patience is one of their strengths. They are prepared to work long and hard to achieve their objectives, are highly ambitious, seldom deterred by adversity and almost oblivious to hostile opinion.

Do you have a serious outlook on life, coupled with a strong sense of responsibility? Are you observant and inquisitive with a good handle on the finances? Or do you have a cynical temperament, often disregard the opinions of your acquaintances, have a less than sympathetic attitude to others and are maybe a little arrogant? A loyal friend who takes family values seriously, the Wadjet personality will highlight the flaky attitude of others who are less disciplined without acknowledging their own faults and don’t expect them to spend, spend, spend … they think themselves thrifty, you will see miserly.

Sekhmet 27 November – 26 December
The lioness-headed Sekhmet was a war and desert goddess, the mistress of fire and known as the “eye of Ra”, indicating the intense heat of the sun. The fire breathing Sekhmet was perhaps the most feared of all Egyptian gods, yet she was also seen as a deity of mystical power and paradoxically, a goddess of healing. Blessed with an abundance of mental energy Sekhmet are capable of handling most tasks that befall them and being a natural creature of fire have the enviable capacity not to get burned and usually land on their feet.

This sign is one of intellectual vitality, mental dexterity and a lively imagination, they have the ability to argue an opponent blue in the face and have endless optimism for their chosen pursuits. Forever formulating plans and new ideas, Sekhmets can sometimes be tiring, even draining on friends and acquaintances. Blessed with boundless faith and optimism, they are also endowed with vision and foresight. Mentally agile and quick to learn, the majority of those born under this sign are observant and possess a remarkably memory. But, they are unwilling to change opinions, even when proved wrong. Impatient, apt to make errors of judgement, quarrelsome and will argue for the sake of it. Give them a wide berth if you know they don’t share the same opinion, or be ready to argue until the cow’s come home!

The Sphinx 27 December – 25 January
This is probably the most enigmatic of all the signs. In Egyptian mythology the Sphinx (whose original Egyptian name was Hu) was not only a treasure guardian, but also a shape shifter, able to change into the form of any other creature. Similarly those born under this sign share many other characteristics with other signs as they can modify and adapt their behaviour to suit their present company. Always eager for new experiences and ready to rise to any challenge, they possess a mischievous quality that sometimes bewilders those around them, however they do not forget about the more practical matters of life and keep a watchful eye on every detail of their ventures.

Outwardly the Sphinx is humorous, witty and fun loving, but inwardly they maintain a serious, keen eyed attitude to life. Ambitious with the ability to command authority, they have considerable powers of concentration and a strong sense of intuition. But, opportunities are sometimes missed through too great an attachment to outdated ideas or methods and they can make bad judgements based on strongly held opinions. Others may consider Sphinxes to be arrogant or vain because they move with an air of certainty, if you see a nose up in the air, it’s probably a Sphinx!

Shu 26 January – 24 February
Shu was the god of sunlight and air and as such was represented as a human being with his hieroglyphic sign, a feather on his head. He was the brother and consort of the lioness-headed, Tefnut and is therefore often referred to as one of the “divine twins”. Their tremendous creative potential virtually guarantees success when they realise their true vocation, often however they are too self-conscious of their failures and ignore their achievements. Shus are true romantics and love to fantasize and reminisce and have a marvellous talent to captivate an audience, enlivening conversation with their enthusiasm for romance and adventure.

A cheerful temperament makes most relationships easy for Shus and many enjoy considerable popularity. A valuable member of any group or team, they bring fresh ideas and an individual approach with style and panache. But, many born under this sign will miss opportunities due to a hesitant and indecisive attitude, they lack confidence and have a tendency to depend on the opinions of others. Extravagance and a love of luxury can create financial problems and their unrealistic ideals and aspirations often result in disappointment. “Still waters run deep” is a very apt phrase to describe the Shu, you will never really know what they are thinking unless they want you to know!

Isis 25 February – 26 March
Represented in completely human form as a beautiful woman, the goddess Isis was worshipped as “the great of magic”. Her name in Ancient Egyptian was Aset, meaning seat or throne and was also the goddess of order. She was the symbolic mother of the pharaoh and the sister-wife of the god, Osiris and the mother of Horus. If you were born under this sign you will be both practical and intuitive in your approach to life, often seeing things from everyone’s point of view. You are able to review situations without personal prejudice, seldom choosing sides in disputes. This enables you to formulate well balanced plans and reach level headed conclusions.

Isis people are energetic, attractive and lively. Honest, forthright and idealistic, with both logic and intuition directing their actions. They are often flamboyant, creative thinkers with a mystical inclination, that when coupled with a highly developed sense of intuition turns many born under this sign towards philosophical or spiritual pursuits. Remind you of anyone? Sound too good to be true? Isis people can have a vivid imagination and should problems become too serious, they will retreat into a world of make believe. Lofty ideas may reduce the chances of success in practical ventures, while unrealistic expectations are a prime source of disappointment! Not so perfect after all.

Osiris 27 March – 25 April
Depicted in human form, Osiris was the god of the underworld and the lord of the Nile. His name in Ancient Egyptian was Asar. Like the evaporating waters of the Nile, those born in this sign tend to be elusive. The Osiris is often misunderstood and their emotions can be a mystery, however they are highly active and rarely allow themselves to be restricted. Osiris is a sign of communication and many will share a love of language, are avid readers with an ability to express their selves clearly in a vivid and witty manner. Even when they have little knowledge, they have the remarkable ability to make it seem as though they are experts.

Osiris people share an active intellect along with a strong sense of intuition. Self reliant and determined they are almost assured of success, with charm and personality to boot, Osiris have a natural ability to entertain and encourage others and are quick to seize the initiative to embark on new experiences. But, they don’t like commitment and responsibilities, have an intense dislike of bureaucracy and refuse to conform to tradition. They believe rules are made to be broken, if you don’t, be careful not to engage in activity with an Osiris!

Amun 26 April – 25 May
Sometimes shown with the head of a ram other times in completely human form, Amun became the supreme state god during the late kingdom of Ancient Egypt. He was the highest creator god, who brought the cosmos into existence, creating the earth and sky from the power of his thoughts. Those born in this sign are resolute and strong and others will look to them for guidance. They are particularly conscientious in most endeavours and the Amun will often play a leading role in political organisations and social groups, in fact few born under this sign are inclined to do anything on the spur of the moment and most do not like change.

Amun forms firm opinions and convictions and anything the Amun sets their mind to is well within the realms of possibility. They have a very practical attitude to life, they are realists and do not have time for fantasists or dreamers and they are born with an abundance of common sense. Reliable, trustworthy, principled and courageous! Their downfall is their unrealistic expectations of others and errors of judgement sometimes made due to strongly biased opinions. If they are your boss, it won’t be an easy ride for you!

Hathor 26 May -24 June
The goddess Hathor depicted in human form wearing the sun-disc on her head flanked by cow horns was both a goddess of the land and the sky, had strong associations with love, music and dancing and as such is a sign of grace and charm. Her name in Ancient Egypt is Het-Hert. Hathors may get carried away with their enthusiasm but once they discover a balance between the down to earth and imaginative, those born under this sign are free to accomplish outstanding achievements. Many Hathors have both spiritual and material aspirations with their intuitive decisions often implemented with firm, rational logic.

Having a natural charm, the Hathor is expressive and theatrical, with easily stimulated emotions. The strongest motivation for them is to be able to enjoy life to the full and are experts at obtaining the best from most situations. Generous by nature they will gain much contentment from helping others, they share the originality of thinking with a quick intellect and good memory. Hathors have the capacity to learn easily, have a romantic temperament with a passion for travel and adventure. However, impatience, intolerance and a tendency to fly off the handle can put tremendous strains on their relationships. This is because they have strong likes and dislikes. They can be impulsive and extravagant and envy is a Hathor trait! So watch out, when there’s a Hathor about.

The Phoenix 25 June – 24 July
This sacred firebird, known to the Ancient Egyptians as the ‘Benu’ was a symbol of life and rebirth. The main characteristic of those born in the sign of the phoenix is the ability to create possibilities from very little. They are optimistic in the extreme, seldom accepting anything as hopeless and usually find the good in everyone, even their enemies. With tremendous vitality, life is an adventure for the phoenix, always eager for adventure and new experiences and ready to rise to the challenge, their life is full of surprises.

Resilient, optimistic and determined, with an inventive and adaptable personality, the phoenix has a conscientious attitude to work. They inspire confidence and enthusiasm in others and will often champion the plight of those less fortunate. But they have a stubborn streak preferring to do things their way even when they know they are wrong, which leads to problems which the phoenix may refuse to face. Often a dreamer and spending too much time on failed endeavours those born under this sign may not lead projects well and you could end up with egg on your face while they rise from the ashes on another venture!

Anubis 25 July – 28 August
The jackal headed god Anubis, known in Ancient Egypt as Anpu, was the guardian of the underworld and the judge of the souls. Those born in this sign can be creative and imaginative, yet retain a firm interest in practical affairs. Self assured in most situations and an air of authority, they have a natural capacity to take control which in turn affords them much respect. Hard working and unafraid of failure or recrimination, as those born in this sign are confident and self-assured, they commit themselves fully to each task they do, whether its work, rest or play and enjoy routine and keep regular habits. They will persevere long and hard to achieve results and will not commit themselves to anything of which they may be uncertain.

Anubis people have a determined spirit with ability for creative thinking. They have a sympathetic personality and their spiritual aspirations are usually well developed, they have a generous nature and an idealistic attitude to life, believing that good will ultimately triumph. However, relationships are sometimes made difficult by their obstinate spirit and they do have a tendency to disregard the attitudes of others, which often leads to unintentional offence.
